Featured Candidate: Kathi Cozzone, Senate District 44
September 26, 2014 | By Krystal Bonner
Chester County Commissioner Kathi Cozzone is challenging Republican Senator John Rafferty for the 44th district seat -- which includes parts of Berks, Chester, and Montgomery counties -- to stand up for Pennsylvania families.
"If elected, I'll be a constant advocate for the people of the 44th district. Harrisburg Republicans like my opponent have been focused on cutting education funding and attacking working families instead of getting Pennsylvania's economy back on track."
Kathi was first elected as Chester County commissioner in 2007 and won re-election in 2011. In her role as commissioner, Kathi has worked hard to make her community a better place to live and work. Currently, Kathi lives in Uwchlan Township with her husband and their 12-year-old son. As the mother of a child in Pennsylvania's public schools, restoring education funding is one of Kathi's top priorities.
"My opponent voted for Tom Corbett's one billion dollar cut to public education funding while big drillers received tax breaks. Pennsylvania ranks at the bottom of the nation in terms of public school funding coming from the state. I will fight to reverse Corbett's cuts so money goes back into our schools."
As commissioner, Kathi has earned a reputation for keeping taxes down and spending under control. Before serving as a commissioner, she spent 25 years in financial business management handling complex budgets for major corporations. Kathi has put this business experience to work for taxpayers in her current role by initiating a strategic planning process to help Chester County maintain its services without increasing taxes.
In addition to restoring education funding, Kathi will use her business and public service experience in Harrisburg to create jobs, defend women's rights, protect the environment, and pass anti-discrimination legislation. As a member of the Chester County Workforce Investment Board, Kathi is a strong proponent of workforce development funding to get people back to work in Pennsylvania.
"Cuts in programs for job training have contributed to Pennsylvania's low ranking in job growth. I support new funding for job training to help workers switch from failing to booming industries. I also support robust funding for our state university system and our community colleges. These affordable higher education options must be available to Pennsylvania workers to prepare them for the family-sustaining jobs of the 21st Century."
Campaign for a Fresh Start Chair Katie McGinty is excited to announce her support of Kathi's campaign: "As a businesswoman, mother, and wife, Kathi shares our values, and she has the experience to get the commonwealth working for everyday Pennsylvanians again. The 44th district needs a senator in Harrisburg that will represent the constituents of Berks, Chester, and Montgomery counties instead of special interests. Kathi is the person for the job, and unlike John Rafferty, she won't turn her back on 44th district residents."
Kathi is excited for the chance to continue to serve the people of Southeastern Pennsylvania in the state Senate.
"The 44th district deserves a senator that will serve their interests. It's time for new leadership in Harrisburg, and I'm ready to fight for Pennsylvania's families."
